As a modern educational and research institution, Charles University has long sought to strengthen the role of sustainable development in both education and research. It is gradually introducing new study programmes and courses and supports both basic and applied research projects, the supervision of student theses, and publication activities focused on this area.

This approach is also reflected in the Charles University Strategic Plan, which emphasises the University’s engagement in addressing major societal challenges and contributing to the development of public policies. Charles University aims to provide expert opinions to the government and public institutions and to contribute research data and expertise to public debate and decision-making.

Charles University therefore supports sustainable development not only through research and education, but also through the active transfer of expert knowledge to public administration, the non-profit sector, and professional practice. An important role in this area is played by the Charles University Environment Centre, which conducts environmental research, provides expertise, and cooperates with public administration bodies, parliamentary institutions, non-governmental organisations, and other academic and research institutions.

Charles University also connects different sectors through the SDSN Czechia and RCE Czechia networks, which bring together universities, research institutions, public administration, non-profit organisations, schools, and businesses. Their aim is to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions, support education for sustainable development, and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A practical example of cross-sectoral cooperation is the CHARLESTON programme, which combines SDG-focused research with several-month placements of researchers in non-academic institutions.

In addition to research and formal education, Charles University is also engaged in raising public awareness of sustainability-related issues. One of the media platforms reaching not only the university community but also the wider public is the Udržitelná Karlovka podcast (available only in Czech). Each month, it presents topics related to sustainable development and innovative approaches to more sustainable living at Charles University. It focuses not only on major global challenges, but also on practical steps that listeners can incorporate into their everyday lives.

Charles University also applies sustainability principles to the development of its own operations. In 2024, for example, the University conducted an online survey focusing on the choice of modes of transport used for commuting to study and work. The survey formed part of the Sustainable Development Action Plan and aimed to map the current travel habits of students and employees and to provide evidence for further measures in the area of sustainable mobility.The questionnaire is available HERE.
