Green Study Room, Kolej Švehlova

On Monday, October 13, a new Green Study Room was opened at Švehlova Dormitory, bringing a fresh breeze into the university environment through circular economy, sustainability, and a pleasant space for study and community life.

The Green Study Rooms project originally began as a bachelor’s thesis by Bc. Andrej Lipan and has since developed thanks to the collaboration between students, Charles University, and the Kokoza organization. There are currently two study rooms in operation – one at Otava Dormitory and the newly opened one at Švehlova.

The new space at Švehlovka is not only a place to study but also a center for recycling plant bio-waste. Students here, as well as at Otava, can process leftovers from meal preparation and observe how, thanks to a 240-liter vermicomposter, they transform into new life for herbs and plants. For those who enjoy caring for houseplants, there is equipment available for repotting and swapping pots or seedlings. The Otava study room also includes a grow box with a UV light and an aeroponic system for growing herbs and vegetables.

The new furniture and fresh design aim to provide students with a space where they feel comfortable and where learning becomes a more enjoyable part of everyday life. The project was brought to life by a group of young people: Julie Toupalová, Michaela Švecová, Lukáš Počinek, Kateřina Vidimová, and Adéla Golasovská.

The study room officially opened with a workshop on “Food Cycles”, after which its management was handed over to the dormitory council of Švehlova.

The Green Study Rooms also serve as an educational platform that introduces the principles of sustainability and circular economy to students of various disciplines, helping them carry these ideas into their future professional practice.

Students from student associations or dormitory councils interested in creating a similar space at their dormitory can request the project manual from .

Up-to-date information about workshops, events, and news can be followed on Instagram or through university communication channels. And for anyone who would like to organize their own workshop or student gathering, the doors of the Green Study Room are open!

Thanks to financial support from the projects Green Skills at CU (NPO_UK_MSMT-2114/2024-4) and Academy of Sustainable Project Management with Kokoza (2024-1-CZ01-KA154-YOU-000239410), and through cooperation with Charles University, it was possible to completely renovate the floors, walls, and furnishings of the room at Švehlova Dormitory.
